Spiced Peaches & Prune Plums

1½ lbs. unpeeled prune plums, halved and seeded
1½ lbs. peeled peaches, seeded, cut into eighths
¾ to 1 cup sugar
6 whole cloves
½ stick cinnamon
¼ cup water


Place all the ingredients in a 3-quart saucepan. The peaches should be cut into pieces about the size of the plum halves. Cover the pan and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium (not high) heat.

Uncover and simmer until the plums and peaches are soft (about 10 minutes). Discard the cloves and cinnamon.

The fruit will continue to cook in the hot syrup after the pan is removed from the heat. The plum skins give the fruit a lovely color and are good to eat.
